BQ24295: Registry settings for PMID

Part Number: BQ24295
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS63001, TPS63002,

I currently have 2 voltage regulators to supply 3V3 and 5V for our product (TPS63001 and TPS63002). I am changing the battery charger to BQ24295 and see that some people are using the boost mode on the PMID line as a 5V voltage regulator. I have a few questions:

- The TPS63002 has 96% deficiency but the PMID line has 90%. In real terms, will this make much of a difference? Using a 1800mAh 3V7 battery.

- Can the PMID line be used as a 5V regulator?

- At the default settings, the PMID line supplies 5.1V when when the product is running from the battery, but the moment the USB cable is plugged in to charge the battery, the output voltage on the PMID line drops to around 4.75V. Will the voltage always drop like this, or are there registry settings that allow the PMID line to output 5V regardless of whether or not the battery is charging?

Thanks in advance,

Sukhvir

  • Sukhvir,

Depending on the charger operating modes, PMID will be supplied by VBUS in charge mode or supplied by the battery VBAT in OTG mode. PMID voltage could vary temporarily during the mode transitions. There's no register bit to prevent the behavior.

    Thanks,

    Ning.
