BQ29200: Fuse portion of the circuit is confusing

Part Number: BQ29200
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2980, BQ2970

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking at using the chip for cell balancing and second level protection. I'm slightly confused about what is being denoted by the fuse and FET circuit connected to the output of this device. Can anyone please offer some clarification on the working is this portion of the circuit. I haven't seen a fuse connected like this before.

Lastly can anyone recommend a IC for second level protection for a single li-ion cell.

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi,

Once the device enters an over voltage condition, the OUT pin will trigger the fuse to blow and therefore disconnect the cells from the PACK+ voltage (usually a charger). This will protect the cells from increasing to an unsafe voltage.

We have 2 options for single cell protection: the BQ2970 and the BQ2980. The BQ2980 features high-side protection FETs and a sense resistor for high accuracy protection. The BQ2970 features low-side protection FETs and is more cost effective.

  • Hi Shawn,

Thanks for the prompt reply. Could you please provide me with a link to a fuse that operates in this way? The ones I'm use to are the normal fuses which have current ratings and time delays.

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Hi,

We have used SFK-3030 on our evaluation modules. You could take a look at that one to get an idea of what you will want to look for.

  • Hi Shane,

thanks for the help thus far. I have looked through every distributors catalog I know of and they dont seem to stock the company that produces these chips ( Dexerials). I also haven't been able to find any other manufacturer that produces this part. Is this part extremely niche and confined to one manufacturer or does it go by another name that other manufacturers also have?

Thanks in Advance for any help!

  • Hi,

Unfortunately, I do not know much about this component. It is not manufactured by TI.
