TPS2373-4EVM-758: Bidirectional TVS at VDD-VSS

Part Number: TPS2373-4EVM-758

Dear team,

Customer design Bidirectional TVS at VDD-VSS. Is this good for PD design?

If bidirectional TVS is not acceptable, what is the risk for this design?

Thanks.

Ben

  • Hello Ben,

We always use a unidirectional TVS diode between VDD_VSS. This is required to protect the IC from overvoltage. If it is not in the schematic, or the clamp voltage is too high, damage is likely to occur.

The input voltage range for VDD_VSS is -0.3V - 100V. A bidirectional TVS would allow the input voltage to clamp at a negative voltage outside of the input range.
