TPS566235: Inductor Design for Various Ranges of Output Currents Requirements

Hi,

Please look into the following query on TPS566235 output inductor design.

The inductor selection table (Table-3 in datasheet) gives Inductor values against particular output voltages, But there is no information regarding output current specification for which the value is designed.

Even if the given inductor values are assumed to be valid for rated current (6A) operation, as the output current is having an inverse relation with the inductor value, the inductance required for a load current less than 6A should be a higher value than that for 6A design. The same relation is used in the attached design example image.

So kindly do confirmhow to fix the inductor value for a given output current requirement.

  • Hi, you need to cal the L value with the IC max current 6A rather than your application max current.

    Thanks for your reply.

    The doubt is,

    As the inductor value is inversely proportional to the output current. Will the inductor designed for 6A application will be an under designed value, if the same design is used for some lower output current applications like 3A or 1A ?

    Or this is due to some internal loop design constraint specific to TPS566235 ,that we always need to conform to the  rated current (6A) for inductor design?

    Two concerns about the recommendation.

    1, The OC value is over 6A, if you cal the value with smaller current spec, the inductor value will be bigger, and if the current ability meets OC spec, the inductor size will be much bigger.

    2, The internal loop, if the LC value out of the recommendation table range, unstable may happen.
