TPS73801-SEP: Thermal protection threshold

Part Number: TPS73801-SEP

Hello,

The TPS73801-SEP datasheet mentions an integrated thermal protection, but I couldn't find further information about it.

Could you please provide the threshold at wich protection occurs and any other useful information (for example if there is an hysteresis on the threshold or if the device shall be powered down after thermal protection).

Thank you for your consideration,

Best regards,

Christian Fallouh

  • Christian,

The thermal overload protection circuit will not trip until somewhere near 175c.

It provides protection from a catastrophic condition, and does not insure that the device will not exceed the absolute maximum rating for junction temperature of 150c.

  • Hello Wade,

    Thank you for your answer.

How does the component recover when protection occurs ? Is there any hysteresis on this protection ? Or does it need to be resetted ?

    Regards

    Christian

  • Christian,

No reset is required to recover from the thermal shutdown.  When temperature falls below threshold, device will attempt to regulate.

There should be some amount of hysteresis, but this is not a characterized or tested parameter.

Just to re-iterate.  The thermal protection is meant to protect the system from a catastrophic failure.  It does not insure that the TPS73801-SEP device stays within Recommended Operating Conditions, nor lower than the Absolute Maximum Ratings.  Ie, a thermal overload may damage the device.
