TPS53316: Performance of device at low current

Part Number: TPS53316

Hi Team

we are  planning to  use  TPS53316 in our  design  . Our  requirement  is

ILoad  min  20 mA,

ILoad  typical  3.7 A

I lod  Peak is  4.8 A

Output  volatage is  3.7 V

As per  datasgheet  " VVBST and VSW to be higher than 2.4 V to ensure the supply for high-side gate driver." Do you  feel if any concern may arise  if  we  enable the switcher  and load  current at that  time is

1) 20 mA  or 4.5 A

Please  suggest  if  any preoccupation need  to be taken care  for light  load  operation .

  • Hello Abhishek,

As explained in the datasheet, this is a limitation you would see only in DE and HEF at low load.

At low load, when system works in discontinuous mode (DCM) -> VSW=VOUT

To ensure proper supply for the high-side gate driver, you need to have V_VBST - VSW > 2.4 V . Meaning VIN-VOUT>2.4V in DCM.

You cannot properly run the device in DE or HEF when load condition is 20mA and VIN-VOUT<2.4V, you would have to operate device in FCCM to solve this.

This does not matter for the 4.5A load condition.

Let me know if you have other questions.

    Thanks a lot!

    Regards,
    Dorian

  • Hello Abhishek,

I haven't hear back from you.

Do you any follow-up questions here ?

    Thanks a lot
