Hello,

my customer is currently using this device in one of their projects and he reached out with some questions related to the mode of operation:

In the TPS65311-Q1 datasheet, he was not able to find the information related to mode of switching (i.e Discontinuous Conduction Mode (DCM) & Continuous Conduction Mode (CCM)) during light load and full load condition. Could you please provide more details related to mode of operation during different load conditions?
In case if this device will switch between DCM and CCM, what kind of precaution needs to be taken to prevent the issues during the transient phase (i.e DCM to CCM and vice versa)?

Hi Stani,

DCM mode is in general applicable to Asynchronous DC-DC regulators and all the TPS65311 BUCK regulators are all synchronous regulators and only BOOST is Asynchronous regulator. There are many application notes available in internet on this topic and there is nothing very specific in TPS65311 BOOST on Asynchronous mode. (For example: https://www.ti.com/download/trng/docs/seminar/Topic_3_Lynch.pdf )

They don't have to take any special precautions on this mode during the load transients. Since Boost current is less in this device, with smaller inductor values, it is mostly likely that regulator works in DCM mode, but as long as they follow the datasheet equations, they should be good. If they really want to avoid DCM mode of operation, they will have to increase the inductor value significantly and I think this is not needed.
