BQ40Z50-R1: Why bq40z50-r1 reset in seal mode??

Part Number: BQ40Z50-R1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO

Ti experts,

I use bq40z50-r1 to make batteries for my UPS customers. They install the battery into the UPS,

and charge and discharge at the same time. Occasionally, there is no output of the battery.

No exception was found in the lifetime record.

After 3 weeks of experiment, we preliminarily analyzed that it was caused by reset.

For example, in the attached data, what causes bq40z50-r1 to reset in seal mode?

Or in sealed mode, what are the causes of reset?

  • Hi,

The log file only shows the output voltage of the Pack, so it is not possible to determine the cause without logging the status registers of the device. Is it possible to connect BQStudio to the SMBus to capture the failure when it occurs?

    Best regards,

    Matt

  • Hi Matt,

Attached data, can you help to analyze why reset twice?

The attachment is the result of emission interference test with two walkie talkies placed at B + position.

     bq40z50-r1 was reset twice.

  • Hello JmYang,

The EMI radiated tests could cause the gauge to reset for a variety of reasons.

    1. Measure for any LDO turn off on PBI pin.

    2. Measure the CHG and DSG FETs to determine if the resets are causing the device to toggle protections.

    3. For EMI tolerance, I have seen faraday cages work best in some applications, please try to see if that will help.

    Thanks!

  • Hi Kang Kang,

Today, I found that the walkie talkie will cause the IFC to lock, but I did not use the function of IFC. Is this the interference that leads to the IC work error?

  • Hello JmYang,

We have seen behaviors similar on our EVM when you have a radio frequency broadcasting close to the gauge.

The best recommendation I have is to try to use a faraday cage.

    Thanks!

  • Hi

There is no room for our products to add Faraday cages.

After this period of hard work,  I found that in BAT,VCC,TS1,TS2,TS3,TS4 input line series magnetic beads, can improve the problem of  walkie talkies interference.

From the perspective of TI, do you think this method is feasible?

  • Hello JM,

We have used ferrite beads before, but I can't speak to their effectiveness for EMI on the board.

If you have seen improvement, then that's a good sign. There's also RF capacitors you could add in parallel to the pins which may have further improvements as they look like shorts to high frequency noise.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hi

I now know that  ferrite beads are effective in dealing with interference, but I don't know whether there is any violation of TI's rules if connect  ferrite beads in series on VBAT , VCC , TS1, TS2 ,TS3 ,TS4 lines.

  • Hi

After all, the typical application circuit of TI has no ferrite beads.

So, I want to know the opinion of TI,will the addition of  ferrite beads have side effects on bq40z50-r1?

  • Hello JmYang,

This is different from system to system. We will not have an answer for this. Please do testing in your system with ferrite beads. We can only guarantee the device performance on the EC table.

    Thanks
