TPS63900: TPS63900 Pulse Current

HI,

Has anyone tested TPS63900 or similar devices with ESP32, which may have a peak-burst current during transmit phase of >350 ma? What will be a recommended type and size of capacitor?. Some users have been using a 470 uF electrolytic capacitor for powering ESP32 (although, not with TPS63900), but I am concerned about the impact of surge current on TPS63900 and also on the capacitor leakage current.

Hi Sudhir,

you could try 22uF output capacitor and measure with TPS63900EVM to check if this load transient if good enough for your application.

Hi Sudhir,

I have been using these with ESP32 designs for a while now without any issues at all. AP+STA, as well as a few LEDs, for a peak >=800mA.

10uF then 22uF output capacitors as recommended by datasheet revisions. 10uF+0.1uF at the ESP32.

Hi Matt,

Thank you for information. I am pleasantly surprised that just 10 uF Cap (with smaller 0.1 uF for noise) is able to handle 800 ma of peak current. I will appreciate knowing about the version of ESP32 module that you are using, as 800 ma peak current seems it bit high. Is the module capable of transmitting with a power amplifier?

Hi Sudhir:

For tps63900, we recommend Cout larger than 10uF (Effective value)

May I know if you have EVM or other circuit in hand? You can do a load transient test to check the perfomance.
