BQ40Z50: BQ40Z50 vs. BQ4050 1S2P battery discharge current 66mA

Part Number: BQ40Z50
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ4050, BQ27510,

Hi Ti Experts,

we want to develop a BMS for a 1S2P (6700mAh) battery.

The nominal discharge current is only 66mA.

This is only a 1/100 C rate. Does the Impedance Track™ Technology works with this low current or
should we use the bq4050 with the CEDV Gas Gauge Technology?

Thanks for helping us.

Klaus

  • Hello Klaus,

The impedance track technology should work with low currents like 66mA. The data memory is very flexible to be able to configure for low currents.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi Wyatt,

    thanks for your answer.

Alternatively we have an old development, which usese the bq27510. Does this device also able to work with low currents like 66mA?

I know that this device also works with the impedance track technology, but I don't know if the data memory is also so flexible like the one from the bq40z50.

Of course we have also on  this old development a separate protector device.

    Thanks for helping us.

  • Hello Klaus,

Yes, most of the gauges are accurate to 1mA and are configurable to low currents. The lower the current the higher the error for measurement is the downside.

    Sincerely,

  • Hi Wyatt,

    thanks for your answer.

Last week got adittional information from our customer. The application ist a little backup-battery for a display in a climate chamber.
So normally the battery is almost always fully charged or it never gets completely empty.

So we think the bq4050 with the CEDV technology ist good enough. Or what are you thinking

    Thanks for helping us.

    Klaus

  • Hello Klaus,

If the battery is rarely discharged the CEDV would work well, IT is better at dynamic loads than CEDV. But since the battery is fully charged most of the time, CEDV might be better a better option.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hi Wyatt,

    thanks for your answer.

    This will help us.

I am goning to order the BQ4050EVM immediately.

    Thanks.

    Klaus.
