TPS56637: Discrete Components Question & Thermal Relief Advice

Part Number: TPS56637

Hello team,

I got the questions from the customer & would like to confirm those.

Could you check the questions below?

1: We found R4:0ohm resistor on the typical application on DS. What's the purpose of this?

2: Little bit concerned about the thermal condition based on the initial calculation. To relieve it, what option we can do aside from adding the fan?

Best Regards,

Kazuki Kitajima

  • Hi,

    1. The R4 is the Bootstrap Resistor, which can make the HSD on switching edge slower so as to reduce the ringing on switching node and get better EMI. Typically, we don't need to solder it, just leave it NC for backup.

    2. Good layout can get better thermal performance.

a: Properly connecting the grounds also provides the best thermal relief of the device. Recommend to pour with maximum ground plane for good thermal performance.

b: Wide VIN and GND traces are also of advantage from the view point of heat dissipation.

c: Provide sufficient vias for the input capacitor and output capacitor.

PCB board material and PCB copper thickness can also effect thermal.

    Thanks,
