BQ24780S: BQ24780SRUYR BATPRES function

Part Number: BQ24780S
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24780

Hi,

We are using BQ24780SRUYR in a board that is being designed. I have a question regarding the functioning of the BATPRES pin.

I am trying to understand what the impact of not implementing battery detection would be.

The reference design bq24780S EVM has implemented a voltage monitor for this. But what if the battery is so discharged that the voltage monitor cannot identify battery presence?

Will the IC not initiate charging if it doesn't get battery detect?

Also if ILIM resistor divider is to be pulled up to 3V3. The BQ24780 is the very first step in the circuit and hence there will be a slight delay before the 3V3 supply is generated by the rest of the power section. Will this have any impact on the functioning of the device?

  • The host can enable charging by write to REG0x14() and REG0x15() when BATPRES is HIGH. I don't see any impact on the ILIM pull-up. ILIM works all the time during startup and normal operation.  When ILIM is below 120mV, the charger won't startup.
