TPS929120-Q1: technical questions

Part Number: TPS929120-Q1

Hello,

I hope this Email finds you well.

My customer  is currently working on a project and has some questions related to the TPS929120-Q1 which could be an interesting solution.

They need to drive 5...8 RGB LEDs on a separate board with approximately 50mA per each single LED.

They have some questions on this device which I hope you could help to answer:

1) Interesting possibility is the configuration of the LED driver over CAN PHYsical. Is it possible to have further bus participants (other than LED driver) connected to the same CAN bus? Their concern is on the communication implementation (event based vs. address based)

2) Is it possible to use a LIN PHY as well? (I guess yes as this is mentioned in the datasheet page 13, correct?)

3) They expect some functional safety requirements which they will need to fulfill.

Which ASIL level can be reached by using the TPS929120-Q1 device?

4) Are there similar LED drivers available? Perhaps up to ASIL C?

Best regards,

Stani

i think it can work because based on the TPS929120-Q1 communication protocol  there is a device address byte for conforming the successful communication, and the tps929120-q1 can support max 16 devices in one communication bus.

    2) Is it possible to use a LIN PHY as well? (I guess yes as this is mentioned in the datasheet page 13, correct?)

    i think it can work.

Which ASIL level can be reached by using the TPS929120-Q1 device?

it's a Functional safety capable and can support ASIL B system.

    4) Are there similar LED drivers available? Perhaps up to ASIL C?

TPS929120 is the only multiple channel device with digital interface in automotive EE from our pl.

  • Hi Frank,

    thanks for your reply.

  • Hi Frank,

regarding question 1) above the customer has some further questions i hope you could help answer:

communication over CAN: We intend to have several nodes on this bus, such as left and right steering wheel switches, central steering wheel electronics(controlling the lightband) and the lightband itself on which TPS929120 could be placed. So it´s not a point to point communication with only two participants [Master + Slave]. Rather it´s a multi CAN. So the question is: is the required implementation of the LED driver communication compatible with the 'normal' communication protocol of the other CAN nodes?

    Best regards,

    Stani

  • the protocol for TPS929120 is flexwire and its a UART communication way. it can be trans to differential signal with CAN transceiver.

To another word, the TPS929120 only use the can bus(the differential signal convert by UART) and have nothing to do with real CAN protocol.
