TPS23525: For the Oring/inrush/holdup circuitry

Part Number: TPS23525
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS2350, , TPS2393A

Customer is trying to replace an ATCA combined PIM and intermediate bus converter.  They are currently using an Artesyn ATCR250 which has gone LTB. Here are some questions from them:

I’ve been looking at the TPS2350 ATCA hot swap reference (SLUU212A) and the TPS23525 (SLVUB36) reference designs.

For the Oring/inrush/holdup circuitry, I’m looking at the TPS23525.  Do you believe that this is a good candidate?  Is there something newer/better?

On the eval board, they have optional component placement for higher current operation and also to support holdup cap charging.  Is there any available documentation for the holdup portion?

Is the artwork and separate schematic for the demo board available?  I’m trying to see how small I can make the layout since space is at a premium.

Thanks

Viktorija

  • Hi Viktorija,

TPS23525 is new controller with enhanced protection features over traditional hot-swap solutions. It offers significant advantages as covered in the app note https://www.ti.com/lit/an/slvae07/slvae07.pdf

What is the power rating for this use case?

The hold up cap can be calculated as follows

    • Cbulk > (2*Pload*Thold)/ (Vnom^2 - Vmin^2)
    • Pload is the amount of power your need to support for the interval Thold.
    • Vnom is the nominal operating voltage and Vmin is the minimum output voltage you desired to maintain during the power failure

  • Hi Rakesh,

Customer will be supporting 250 watts.

He is working on adding some other features to make it compatible with ATCA.  Such as Enable A and Enable B inputs.

Can you provide any guidance on how to add Input A and Input B status signals to offer the same outputs as the Artesyn STCR250 that they currently use?

    Thanks

    Viktorija

  • Hi Viktorija,

Please see the block diagram of TPS2393A. INSA and INSB are to detect whether input A and Input B are connected properly or not. Hope this helps.

    Best Regards, Rakesh

  • Hi Viktorija,

To further elaborate on the above comment.

If it is for Input insertion detection, we can use the approach followed in TPS2393A at pins INSA, INSB

If it is to check the source availability at Input A and Input B, we may need to add supervisory circuits at the inputs A, B.
