BQ24616: About "disable termination"

Part Number: BQ24616

Hi,

The following contents are described in the data sheet.
I don't understand the difference between the operation when charge termination is disabled and the operation when charge termination is enabled.
Could you explain the difference between these behaviors?

If I disable Termination, will it continue to charge?
On the other hand, if Termination is enabled, how can I recharge after charging is complete?

Regards,
Yusuke

  • Hi Yusuke,

Please read the corresponding sections in the datasheet, specifically section 8.3.5 Charge Termination, Recharge, and Safety Timer. It describes behavior to all questions you asked above. Figure 12. of the datasheet will help you as well.

  • Hi Kedar ,

    Thank you for your response.
I understand the charging current behavior when terminating is enabled.
However, it does not describe the charging current state or state transition when the termination is disabled.
Could you explain in detail the operation of disabling the termination?

With that setting, bq24616 will continue to charge.
And bq24616 will CC charge again if VBAT changes.
    Is this understanding correct?

    Best regards,
    Yusuke

  • Hi Yusuke,

Termination is when battery voltage is being regulated at VFB and charge current detected is less than termination current. During CV phase, output voltage is regulated and charge current is allowed to taper down until termination threshold is hit. If you disable termination, then charge current will continue tapering down and charge will always be in progress. Usually in this case a gauge will handle the termination. Downside to disabling termination, is longer charging time in CV phase.
