Manage NiMh battery cells of 10s

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ2000, BQ24105

Hi All,

I need a battery charger for NiMh 10cells, better with VDS higher than 20V, the battery can supply at fully charge 14.5V.

Right now I could not find any smart solution for this, so I am using a step down converter, but eager to hear from you any other possible solutions for BQ parts.

Many Thanks,

Antonio

  • Antonio,

For charging NiMH > 0.5C, the recommended termination method is -dV/dt and/or dT/dt.  The only charge IC TI has for this is the BQ2000 family.  The BQ2000 is a controller of external active components and so can be modified to charge from 20V input.

The charging NiMH < 0.5C, it is okay to charge until a safety timer expires.  If you can power from 16V input, you can use the BQ24105 with capacitor adjustable safety timer.  With this charger and its LiIon charge profile, you have to set the charge voltage higher and termination current lower than normal in order to let the timer control termination.
