BQ24160: Can I read current battery level from BQ24160?

Part Number: BQ24160
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ25896

I have a BQ24160RGER in a circuit.  Everything is working fine.  However, I would like to be able to query the chip and find out the current battery level.  My objective is to display to a user the current battery percentage, whether charging or discharging.  I can't seem to find this capability in the BQ24160 datasheet.

If I can't do this with the BQ24160, how might I do it while also not adding undue load and reducing battery life.  For years (decades) on automotive systems, I've measured the car battery with a simple resistor divider going into an ADC.  However, this does add load and reduce battery lifetime.  On a car battery, this is inconsequential.  But on a 3800 mAHr battery, this is a big deal.

Thanks!

  • Hi Helmut,

Unfortunately, this older generation charger does not have integrated ADC.  For ADC you would have to move to BQ25896 single input charger or later chargers.  TI currently does not have a dual input charger with ADC.
