BQ24715: Current limit for discharging from battery to system node

Part Number: BQ24715
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24780S

Hi,

My customer would like to implement current limit function  when discharge current is supplied from battery to system node in figure 8 in the datasheet of BQ24715.

Does this device have such current limit function?
If the device has the function, how does the device work?  Does the device clamp the current with regulating by BATFET, or turn off the p-channel BATFET between system node and battery?

Best Regards, Taki

  • Hi Taki,

The BQ24715 has an IOUT pin which can be used to monitor the discharge current, but it does not have its own discharge current regulation. The intended use is for the host MCU to monitor the IOUT pin and temporarily throttle down the CPU speed if the discharge current is too high for the application.

If you need a multi-cell SMBus charger which has its own integrated discharge current regulation, then you can consider the BQ24780S. Section 7.6.12 and Figure 32 in the BQ24780S datasheet describe the behavior of the discharge current regulation. However, the BQ24780S is a hybrid topology charger, not an NVDC charger like the BQ24715.

    Best regards,

    Angelo
