BQ76952EVM: Issue Connecting with bqStudio

We are currently developing a device with 4-cell Li-ion batteries and plan on using the bq76952 battery monitor. We have purchased the bq76952 EVM and have been following the quick start guide to set it up. However there are issues connecting the board with bqStudio.

Initially when the USB cable was plugged into the board and a PC, the LED lights did not turn on. We had to update the firmware(0.28) of the EV2400 chip on the board before the LEDs turned on and bqStudio detected a device. However bqStudio still does not detect the correct chip. The Auto Detected Device shows up as "0_0_0" and if we manually set up the device and enter bqStudio, the values displayed are not correct at all. The temperature shows as 909.25°C and all the values are incorrectly displayed.

I have attached some pictures of our setup and bqStudio. We are using bqStudio beta version 1.3.102.

What could the issues be with bqStudio or the chip?

Hi Adrian,

Version 0.28 of the EV2400 firmware will actually not work for this device. The EVM should have come shipped with a later version of the firmware. Here is the link to download v0.32 which is recommended: https://tidrive.ext.ti.com/u/hFkU19bZFNWWWRTW/EV2400Updater-0.32-windows-installer.exe.zip?l

I also wanted to let you know that the BQ76952 has officially released to production in the last few days. That means the final version of the device is available to order and has several improvements over the pre-production version that you have in hand. For example, the cell balancing feature was not enabled on the pre-production version. The new EVM with the final version is also available, but if you want to just replace the IC on the EVM you have, that might be the best option.

Hi Matt,

We have updated EV2400 firmware version to 0.32 but bqStudio is still not recognizing the device. The Auto_Detected_Device is showing up as 0_0_0.

However we do require cell balancing as well and would like a production version of the chip. Can you confirm if the BQ76942 has also been released to production? We would like to return our current BQ76952EVM board and order the BQ76942EVM board. If the BQ76942 is still in pre-production then we can order the BQ76952EVM board with the updated features.

Hi Adrian,

The BQ76942EVM is now released to production and can be ordered on ti.com. I am not sure why the auto-detect is not working for the board that you have. Can you verify that this file below is present in your C:\ti\BatteryManagementStudio\config\ directory?

Hi Matt,

The file "Monitor_7695_0_24-bq76952.bqz" is present in the C:\ti\BatteryManagementStudio\config\ directory. I have also added the file you provided "0268.Monitor_7695_0_24-bq76952.bqz" to the directory but it is still not auto-detecting the chip.

We will go ahead and order the BQ76942EVM and try out bqStudio when it arrives.

We received a new production version of the BQ76952EVM board. It works now, bqStudio auto-detects the chip and reads all the values correctly.
