BQ24610: for Lithium Phosphate

Part Number: BQ24610
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24630

Hi,

Can BQ24610 be adopted for Lithium Phosphate?

I know BQ24630 supports Lithium Phosphate but its switching frequency is 300kHz.

Customer's application needs small package so they want to reduce inductor size.

So I would like to utilize 600kHz of BQ24630 to Lithium Phosphate.

Thanks.

  • Hi David,

BQ24610 and BQ24630 have similar overall charging profiles, but the difference in VLOWV threshold is main difference. Customer has to determine whether the longer precharge window in BQ24610 is acceptable compared to that of BQ24630. They will also have to consider that BQ24610 does have an inbuilt 30 minute precharge safety timer, and if VFB does not rise above VLOW within 30 minutes, then a fault is indicated and charge is suspended.

  • Hi Kedar,

    Thanks for your support.

In the calculation table for BQ24630, recommended inductance for 6A is 5.6uH.

If 2.2uH is adopted, what is the expected issue besides saturation current of inductor?

Inductor will be adopted to support saturation current in peak.

    Thanks.

  • Hi David,

Lower inductance generally has lower DCR which is better for efficiency, but downside is inductor current ripple is larger, as inductor current ripple is inversely proportional to inductance. Converse is true for larger inductance values.
