TPS25927: input short condition

Part Number: TPS25927

Hi,

my customer is using TPS259271 with configuration below:

input is 18V, BFET is not used, unpluggable load is attached to OUT.

Since VIN is 18V which is recommended operating maximum VIN, is it risky to plug and unplug the load when Vin is 18V?

Since they haven't taken VIN short into consideration, so they left BFET floating.

But in fact they face input short condition, and they find that the device would break when input is shorted. And the load capacitance is 420uF. They are not sure the device is broken for the high reverse current flowing through diode, or input voltage oscillation exceeds -0.3V absolutely maximum rating. So they ask if we have the data that shows how big load capacitance the device could handle at input shorted from 18V to 0V?

  • Hi Howard,

Do you have waveform captures at the instant of input short ? Can customer measure the voltage on input to see the ringing min and max ?

We do not have data regarding how big load capacitance the device could handle at input shorted from 18V to 0V. In case you have a possible input short circuit condition, we recommend you to use the BFET or use an integrated device like TPS25947x which has back to back FETs.
