Battery Management

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ78PL114, BQ77PL900

Hello for a medical device we need a battery management system. whick will charge a 7 cell li-ion battery and use it as backup for the system. Also we need to monitor the battery level, interface it with a microprocessor (using I2C). bq77PL900 does the monitoring and cell balancing but does is charge the batteries? or is there a system circuit to charge, monitor, cell balance and use it as back up for the main system?

  • In a very modular concept approach you might have a SMBus gauge for the battery and a SMBus charger controlled by a SMbus system controller.  The bq78PL114 based gauge might monitor the battery - it can make charging parameters available but does not provide a charger function.  For a charger function you might look at .

With the bq77PL900 you have a simpler AFE part which will require a host for monitoring battery level. Knowing your system requirements you can determine if you need to build it into a separate monitor function that communicates to other modules or if one controller can handle all 3 operations: monitoring the battery, operating the charger and deciding on system control.
