Hello TI,

I am going to design battery charger for 6S (10000mAh) Li-Polymer battery. Battery charging current should be 10A. Also require voltage monitoring and balancing features. It should have CC,CV, and temperature control mode too. if possible, we are looking for analog solution only. My queries are as per below.

Query 1 : I found that, Battery charger IC and Cell monitoring ICs are separate. Is any part available which can serve all purposes ? Please suggest.

Query 2 : Should I combine Battery charger IC (BQ24616) and Cell monitoring IC (BQ76930) for my application ? Please suggest alternate of it if any.

Query 3 : As I want analog circuit design only, please suggest any suitable cell monitoring circuit which does not require MCU.

Hi Tirth,

Regarding 1, I am not aware of a single TI IC solution that includes charging and cell monitoring.

Regarding 2, BQ24616 is capable of charging up to 6 series, with max input voltage of 28V but BQ76930 requires host controller with I2C.

Regarding 3, I will forward this to the monitor group for advice on the monitoring circuit.

BQ76942 is a 10s monitor that is currently in PREVIEW and which will move to ACTIVE soon. It can work with a MCU like BQ76930 but can also work in stand-alone mode. Please check for BQ76942 here. You can also look at the BQ76952 for inspiration as it's a very similar IC which we recently RTM'ed.

Hello Jeff,

Reading 1 : I understand that, I have to combine both ICs for full phase operation.

Reading 2 : Please share reference document/schematic where charger IC and Monitor ICs are combined. Is there any tool where can analyze those ICs?

Reading 3 : Waiting for advice.

Hi Tirth,

Unfortunately, there is no document with both those ICs used in combination nor is there a tool where you can analyze those ICs. I recommend ordering the EVMs for both ICs, connecting them together with medium to heavy gauge wire and testing on the bench.
