UA78L: Failure mode at high temperature.

Guru 11255 points

Hi team,

I'd like to know about failure mode at a high temperature.

My customer often uses it to exceed 125 degrees.
What kind of failure mode can be considered if this condition continues?
Ex) short at Vout to GND.

I think that the thermal shutdown will take place at 160 degrees.

Sincerely.
Kengo.

  • Hi Kengo,

The recommended junction temperature for this device is 125C. We normally advise customers that constantly running the device over the recommended junction temperature could negatively affect the reliability, but for detailed possible failure mode, I will need to consult with our quality engineer. Please allow 2 business days for me to confirm with our quality team to see if they could provide more details.

    Regards,
    Jason

  • Hi Jason,

    Thank you for your reply.
    I understood.
I'll wait for your quality engineer reply.

    Sincerely.
    Kengo.

  • Hi Kengo,

I have contacted our quality engineer, and will post back once I get a reply.

    Thank you,

    Jason

  • Hi Kengo,

When constantly pushing the device's junction temperature higher than the recommended 125C, it will affect the reliability of the device. To be more specific, the FIT rate will be affected, and you can use the Arrhenius equation to estimate, and a handy calculator is provided here.

I know you are looking for the detailed failure modes, but the failures due to elevated Tj tends to be random and I would suggest going with the FIT rate change approach.

    Regards,
    Jason
