BQ24172: Using BQ24172 only to switch between AVCC and VBAT

Part Number: BQ24172

We may want to use a different charger since this part is failing EMC testing, even after a re-spin with modified layout and stackup.  We are testing some additional mitigations from https://e2e.ti.com/support/power-management/f/196/t/944636.  It is very disappointing to learn that the "reference" layout was not designed to minimize EMI.  The EVK is extremely noisy.

My question is: Is it possible to use the BQ24172 only to switch between a 12VDC supply (AVCC) and VBAT, without using it for battery charging?  And without interfering with another charging IC (simple NiMH charger).

If this is possible, I have several other questions:

  • What are the minimal components required for this?
  • Can we omit the switching inductor?
  • Do we need to keep the connection to FB pin?
  • Can we implement this just by holding ISET low?

If this is not possible, does TI have a recommended part for switching between 12VDC and 7.2V VBAT for uninterrupted system power supply?

Thanks,

Jackson

  • Jackson,

If you are not planning on implementing charging at all, you would probably be better served from a cost, BOM, and EMI perspective by an ideal diode OR.

TI offers several ideal diode/ORing controllers. I suggest posting a new thread and getting in touch with that team.

I hope this resolves your issue,

    Ricardo
