BQ24773: Bq24773 Not going to disconnect a battery when battery fully charged

Part Number: BQ24773
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61088, EV2400

Hello TI,
We are design Battery management system for single cell 5Ah Lithium Ion battery, In that we are use different TI IC to make it Intelligent, Reliable  and Efficient.

1. Battery charging Uses BQ24773
2. Fuel Gauge uses BQ27542
3. Boost converter TPS61088
4. Input wall adapter 5V/5A
5. Output load 5V/3A

Issues is Battery not going to charge efficiently and we observe that after some time (10-15 days later) battery  going to swelling

We configure the BQ24773 system as per the TI Guidelines
Configure and Calibrate BQ27542 by using EV2400 and uses golden image file for application

We want to use Battery as UPS system, when Input adapter source absent battery need to Source the load.

Why battery going to swell, what is the good practice to use battery as UPS with BQ24773  ..?
there we need to disconnect battery when it fully charge, then how..?
How to avoid battery swelling issues, is this because of Battery is continuously connected to charging IC ..?

What we facing is the serious issue, we need to identify the root cause of the problem and resolve it As early as possible

  • Hi Rahul,

What is the charge current, and what do you mean by "battery is not going to charge efficiently"? Please make sure you are operating within the battery manufacturer's specifications.

It is not a problem for the battery to always be connected. The BATFET will turn off after the battery is fully charged. Also, since you are using the BQ24773 in a 1s application, please make sure the BATFET is able to fully turn on, as described below.

Lastly, for 1s applications, we typically recommend one of our dedicated single-cell chargers, such as the BQ2560x family or the BQ2589x family. These chargers allow a simpler, more integrated solution for 1s applications.

    Best regards,

    Angelo
