BQ34Z110: Support the information to set up BQ34Z110

Part Number: BQ34Z110
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: GPCCHEM

Dear Texas Instrument's Supporter.

My's name is Chien, I need some information about your BQ34z110 product, The information's code: Set up BQ34Z110.

My application is Lead Acid Battery pack (24V 75Ah): 2 serial Battery (12V 75Ah).

If I want to manage the above Battery pack, I need to set the parameters:
+Qmax Cell 0: 7500 mAh (scale x10)
+Design Cell Capacity: 7500 mAh
+Design Cell Energy: 1500 mWh
+Design Cell Voltage: 2000mV.
+Number of Serious Cells: 12
+Design Energy Scale: 10.
+I Calibrated Voltage and Current (= Actual Current /10).
+Chemical ID: 0x0803.

The above setting would be correct with a pair of Batteries under ideal circumstances. But if I use an bad pair of batteries (Ex: old batteries pack, full charge capacity 50Ah/75Ah), Is BQ34Z110 able to auto update the parameters to match that bad pair of batteries ? how should I impact to BQ34z110 ?

After the BQ34Z110 has been configed for the pair of battery. Aafter a period of use, the battery life will also decrease. Is BQ34Z110 capable of changing the parameters to match the pair of battery? Do I need to affect BQ34Z110 ?

  • Hi Chien,

It is recommended to use a new battery when configuring a gauge. If you were to use an old battery pack, it will update the Qmax and Ra values to reflect the values of an older battery. Are you asking if the gauge will continue to work after a period of use? If so, the gauge is designed to track the state of health for the battery.

  • Hi Jessica,

I understand what you mean, But there are no ideal pairs of batteries to use, right ?

I have tried new and old batteries, and I found that initially the SOH parameter did not change with both batteries. Then I charge and discharge about 1-2 cycles but have not seen the change in parameters as you said.

I will initially set the ideal parameters for BQ34z110, then I charge and discharge the battery as usual. BQ will automatically update the parameter  without user interaction, right ? I think at least I need a bit of interaction to support BQ in updating Qmax and Ra parameters as you said. If interaction is required, how should I impact BQ ?

Similar to the question of long-term use, do users need to interact with BQ to support it updating parameters, or just need to charge and discharge the battery as usual ?

    Tks for your help!

  • Hello Chien,

The values will update as the batteries cycle and Ra and Qmax values update, it may not be updated after 1-2 cycles if the values didn't update.

The batteries should be new and match the pack you did the learning cycle for, then after some cycles the SOH should update when the Ra and Qmax update.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller

  • Hello Wyatt,

    Tks you for help!

I have read in the BQ datasheet and saw the design steps: Step 8: Run an optimization cycle.

So when I initialize BQ, do I need to run Step 8? Or I simply need to charge and discharge the battery as usual. The parameters RA and Qmax will be able to update when I send IT Enable 0x21 command, right?

    Regards,

    Trinh Minh Chien

  • Hello Trinh,

I would recommend you go through the theory of impedance track app note. That explains the Ra and Qmax updates.

When you initialize the bq device, you will need to make sure to configure the right chemistry using GPCCHEM, then the optimization cycle can be run after you enable IT.

    Thanks!

  • Hello Kang,

    Tks for your help?

I need a correct answer about using step 8 (optimization cycle).

For example: I have a new battery and have initialized device BQ matching that battery , BQ has also been running step 8 (optimization cycle) and got the appropriate RA and Qmax parameters. I could then apply those parameters to another 100 + BQ battery pairs (maximum capacities of those 100 batteries would not be the same) without having to run step 8 (optimization cycle). Easier than the first battery is that I just need to IT enable, then I charge and discharge the battery as usual.

    Regards!

  • Hi Chien,

If they are the same battery model with identical chemIDs then you do not have to do anything else. If they are different then you will need to re-run the learning cycle for the different battery.

  • Hi Jessica,

Tks for your help ! I already have the answer to my question, I will test BQ to verify that.

    Regards,

    Trinh Minh Chiến.
