TPS4H160-Q1: Start-Up Inrush Current Limiting

Part Number: TPS4H160-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS25982, LM5069

Hi,

I read in Application Note SLVA859B that TI's Smart Power Switches can be used to limit inrush currents when switching devices on.

Do you also sell an IC that only has that functionality, i.e., only adjustable current limiting, without the switch functionality?

It would be used in a context where my design already has a switch, but its slew rate is not controllable, hence creating large startup inrushes.

The startup inrush current limiting function would be placed between this existing switch and the load.

Best,

Charles

  • Hello Charles,

Two devices from the HSS portfolio that you could use in the way you've described are the TPS1H200, TPS1H000. For both the TPS1H200 and the TPS1H000 you can tie Vs and EN together so there's no switching, but make use of the current clamping capability. TPS25982 is an efuse that could also work for you.

  • Hi Charles,

Are you looking for a controller for the switch (MOSFET ?) to manage inrush currents ? If yes - LM5069 is a good option.

What is the system voltage and load current level ?

    Best Regards, Rakesh

  • Hi Rakesh and Kalin,

Many thanks for your answers! I believe the TPS1H200 would do well.

Our application is at 28V, with an inrush at 6A and a load current level of 0.5A.

    Best regards,

    Charles
