TPS23730: Non-Isolated DC-DC Converter to 18V from PoE (i.e. is flyback the only way?)

Part Number: TPS23730
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS23750

TI Team,

We've been asked to update a PoE (802.3bt Type 4) audio amplifier for a client and are looking for a highly integrated solution that will minimize the total solution volume. I notice that the PoE PD controllers which incorporate a DC-DC controller are all shown in the customary flyback topology. Because we have isolation elsewhere in the system (Molex MagJack), we don't need the isolation provided by the flyback topology. Is it possible to use the integrated DC-DC controller to run a traditional buck converter? We need to generate an 18V rail, and using the part in this manner should allow us to reduce the total solution size. An app note or reference design would be great if you know of one that we could take a look at.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Cody

  • Hello Cody,

Yes the TPS23730 can be used in a buck application.

We do not have any reference designs in that topology at this time.
however, you can look at some of our other Poe_PD's + DCDC controllers in a buck application to help you get you started.

The below link is a 12 buck with the TPS23750.
