UCC28C43-Q1: pulse skipping

Part Number: UCC28C43-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28C43, TPS40210

Hi Experts,

the device seems to have no feature to improve the light load efficiency, like pulse skipping. Can you confirm that there are better recommendations if this is a key requirement?

  • Hi Simon!

Can you help me to better understand your requirements here? By definition the UCC28C43 will skip pulses if the COMP pin voltage is below the cutoff threshold.

    Thank you,

    Aidan Davidson

  • Thanks Aidan,

that partly answers my question. We were wondering if this is the case (the device skips pulses in light load conditions) since we did not find a note about this in the datasheet.

Is this generally the case for these PWM controllers? Is this the same at the TPS40210?

  • Hi Simon!

I can't speak to the TPS40210 as I'm not familiar with that device, but with other similar families to the UCCx8C4x family (the TLx84x, the UCx84x, the UCCx80x) all modify the pulse width based on the feedback from the system control loop. If the COMP pin voltage falls below the threshold, the PWM output will stop pulsing until the COMP voltage comes back up.

    Thanks,

    Aidan
