TPS61089: TPS61089 Soft Start

Part Number: TPS61089
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS61088

I wish to use the TPS61089 or 88 to charge a large capacitor 2mf to 17mf in different applications.

Vin will be 5v and Vout 12v or 10v. Then the output capacitor is discharged by a current regulated amplifier.

Using LTspiceXVII and the PSpice subcircuit, the initial current is large, 12A before the regulator starts using the circuit displayed in Webench.

This initial current is critical to the design, I would like to keep it as low as possible, perhaps 1A.

the sub circuit does not have SS as one of the pins, but instead has parameter SS=0.

Can I model soft start by changing that parameter?

Can you comment on this part's expected soft start behavior in peak amps and time?

Thanks, archieb

  • Dear Sir,

Do you mean you want to use TPS61088 to directly charge the 2mf to 17mf big cap?

The initial current will be very very high before the Vout across the cap rise to 5V. And the input current before Vo rise to Vin is uncontrollable.
