TPS23861: Reason for low side fuses

Part Number: TPS23861

On all the reference designs for TPS23861, the fuse is located on the low side. Is there a reason why?

Keeping it on the lowside there will still be 48V available in the connectors even if the fuse blows. If there is another GND connection (possibly unwanted) this will not limit the power emitted from the PSE.

  • Hi PA,

Since the common connection is VPWR on all the ports of the PSE, depending on where the fuse on the high side is connected, the current rating will need to be higher. Having it on the low side allows each individual port to be protected rather than if one breaks, all ports can potentially open circuit.

Note the fuse is also optional. It is typically required to pass UL without needing to go through the bench testing certification.

The fuse is a current protection component and not voltage. Usually <60V is a safe voltage.

    Thanks!
