BQ34Z100EVM: Quick Start Guide - Questions and GPCCHEM Questions

Part Number: BQ34Z100EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQSTUDIO, , GPCCHEM, EV2400

Hi,

i am trying to understand the whole thing in english (I am from germany) and there are some question about the Quick Start Guide:

1. Why do I need a DC power supply that can supply 50V and 3A (2.1 Items Needed for EVM Setup and Evaluation) ? I can't find anything about this (where to plug in?) in the Quick Start Guide

2. In 3.2.1 Cell Configuration: There are 2 paragraphs with the same sentence "For packs where the stack voltage is less than 5 V". I think one of them should be called "more than 5 V"?

3. I've got a Batterypack with 8x Eneloop 1.2 V Batteries in Series in it (When the Batterie are full, they have around 11 V and 750 mAh).

  • So I have to plug the "+" to the "TB3-Bat +" and the "-" to the "TB3-Bat -"?
  • What's with the "PACK -" and "Load & Charger"?
    • Is this the part where I can add my Resistor to simulate an 1 Ampere Load?
    • So At around 11 V with 1 Ampere i need 11 Ohm Resistor? (Or do I have to choose a different resistor -> see Question 4.3.2)

  • What is the "Protection"? Do you have an example or a item for me?

4. Because we are using eneloop NiMH Batteries which are not in the ChemID, I have to follow the GPCCHEM tool.

  • So i charge the Batterie to full (with or without the BQ34Z100EVM and BQStudio?),
  • wait 5 hours (with or without the BQ34Z100EVM and BQStudio?),
  • Discharge at C/20 rate
    • (with the BQ34Z100EVM and BQStudio to see when the the minimal voltage has been reached?),
    • What is C/20 rate? (11 V (meassured), 750mAh, 8*1,2 V in Series) Do I have to use a 333 Ohm in "Load" so it takes around 20 hours to discharge?
  • 5 hrs relax (with or without the BQ34Z100EVM and BQStudio?)?

If someone wants to answer these questions in german, I would be happy. If not, then I'll try my best to understand it in english.

Thanks for your help

  • Hello Benjamin,

This is to charge the batteries for the learning cycle.

Yes one of them should be more than 5V (it's the second one which mentions VOLTSEL)

Pack- is for charging or discharging, so the current flows through the sense resistor for the gauge to measure the current.

C/20 means the battery capacity divided by 20 should be the discharge. You can use bqStudio and EV2400 to follow the GPCCHEM guide to make the logs needed to submit to the GPCCHEM tool.

    Sincerely,

    Wyatt Keller
