BQ24773: BQ24773 required cell balancing, if there is 4 Cell's are in parallel.

Part Number: BQ24773

Hello TI,
Currently we are using BQ24773 Battery charging IC,

1. BQ24773 support Parallel battery cell connection if yes, what is maximum capacity of Battery pack & battery pack capacity support ..?
2. BQ24773 what is the ideal condition & requirement of Parallel battery pack connection configuration..?
3. We are planning to use Lithium Ion INR21700 M50 18.20Wh(LGM50) , Connecting 4 cell parallel to achieve  required battery capacity to our system, there is any recommendation for that  or is it suitable to BQ24773 ..?
4. As per the design requirement Bq24773 is suitable..? if there is any better replacement of BqQ4773 please suggest us.

Thanks,
Rahul

  • Hi Rahul,

Yes, the BQ24773 can charge battery packs that have multiple cells in parallel. Two cells in parallel will self balance.

The BQ24773 is a 1s-4s charger. This refers to the number of series cells. However, it is okay to place additional cells in parallel in order to increase the total battery capacity.

There isn't a specific maximum battery capacity. Practically, this is limited by the charge time. Assuming the charge current is the same, then a battery pack with a higher capacity will take longer to charge than a battery pack with a lower capacity.

It sounds like you want to use a 1s4p battery pack configuration with four INR21700 M50 cells in parallel. For 1s applications, we typically recommend one of our dedicated single-cell chargers, such as the BQ2561x family or the BQ2589x family. These chargers offer a much simpler, more integrated solution for 1s applications than a multi-cell charge controller with external FETs like the BQ24773.

    Best regards,

    Angelo

  • Hello Angelo,
Please take look of this thread  which is suggested by TI, as per that we selected BQ24773
Can suggest by considering all requirement of charging IC to replace BQ24773 where we can get more efficient performance, if there is any alternative available.

    Thanks,

    Rahul

  • Hi Rahul,

Some of the key parameters to keep in mind when selecting a charger IC are the battery's cell count (# of cells in series), the max charge current, the adapter voltage, and the control interface (I2C, SMBus, or standalone).

If you let me know these parameters, then I can help suggest some charger ICs which would best fit your application. Since you mentioned that you will use a 1s4p battery pack, I would suggest one of our dedicated single-cell chargers unless you need a charge current >5 A. You can also enter your parameters into the quick search tool below, which will point you in the right direction:
