TPS40195: Spec check

Part Number: TPS40195
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM25117, LM5141

Hi Team,

I would like to find the solution which could meet below requirements.

1. Vin = 12V

2. Vout = 10.5V-8V

3. Iout = 10A

And I found that duty(max) is 87.5%. It couldn't meet IC spec. And we also would like to set cycle by cycle current limit value.

For example, we set ILIM = 8A, when Iout higher than 8A, The IC would clamp the Iout = 8A and slowly lower 10.5Vout.

Could you help suggest corresponding part for us?

Roy

As you note in your message, the TPS40195 will not support the application, as it will not support a 12V input with an 8V to 10.5V output, nor does it support constant current limit.

Your inquiry was directed to me because I am the lead applications engineer supporting the TPS40195, but I will check with our broader team for a part that offers both wider duty cycle and constant current limit instead of over current shut-down.

To make sure we look at the right set of parts, what is the full expected range of the 12V input voltage, including drop out for the 10A load current.

  • Hi Peter,

Thank you for your information and engagement. After I checked with customer, 12V->10V is ok, but constant current limit should be used.

    Roy

  • Thank you for the feedback Roy.  I am checking on the parts to see what would be the best solution for the customer's application.

  • Hi Roy,

We have the LM25117 with a CM pin configurable for constant current (CC) operation. However, it's toff-min spec is somewhat high, so you need to check the max achievable Vout depending on the selected switching frequency.

We also have the LM5141 controller where the RES pin can be tied to VDDA to disable current limit hiccup and achieve a constant peak current limit. For converters with a constant voltage (CV) output, we need the implementations in app note snva829 using an output sense resistor and CS amplifier.

    Regards,

    Tim
