BQ76PL455A-Q1: Balancing Start condition

Part Number: BQ76PL455A-Q1

What is the minimum voltage difference between 2 cells required for balancing to start.

In other words, after what threshold value the balancing commences.

  • Hi Roshan,

Section 7.3.7 of the datasheet explains the criteria for cell balancing, a min voltage between cells is not one of the criteria but in the real world they shouldn't be more than a few 100mVs different anyway. What is the concern?

  • I wanted to know the cut off value as in commercially available BMS the value is specified, I was curious if there was any cut off value for BQ76PL455AQ1. Also, with this value, we can estimate how much percentage difference in SoC will always persist in case of balancing or in other words how much imbalance will persist between cells. Also, we can calculate the energy range which can be stored if we charge the battery as a whole pack.

So if you have real-time test data on the voltage difference when balancing starts it will be really helpful.

    Roshan

  • Hi Roshan,

As I mentioned we do not spec this so unfortunately I do not have data on this to share. Ultimately cell balancing routine is something system specific that we leave up to the user to determine their sequence and turn on time.
