TPS56628: TPS56228 transient current capability

Part Number: TPS56628

Hi there,

Based on TPS56228 datasheet, the highest current limit is 8.9A, however, when conducting SCP test, the output current might exceed 8.9A within a short period of time(around 5us). Is there any risk of damage when output current exceeds 8.9A?

  • Hi Charles,

The current limit is for over current protection.

For a buck converter, output current equals to the sum of inductor current and output capacitor current. If the inductor current exceeds the current limit, it will be limited to a certain value with the over current protection. Thus if the output current is too high and triggers over current protection, the output capacitor will be discharged to provide the current equals to Iout-IL.

So there's no damage risk with the internal over current protection. But output voltage will drop if the over current protection is triggered.

    Regards,

    Andrew
