UCC28700: what are the specifications of Transformer that can be used with UCC28700? Trouble getting the desired output while working with UCC28700 in TINA.

Part Number: UCC28700

Hi,

I am trying to design flyback SMPS for an input of 240V and output of 25V, 1.2A. I have used web bench power supply design to generate a circuit. I have created similar circuit in TINA. But I could not able to generate the desired output.

My doubts are the following:
1. I have used non linear transformer with seperated secondary coils in the circuit. I have kept N primary as 63, N secondary as 11, N aux/ third winding as 9. If this is not the rightful approach. What are the specifications of transformer I will have to use to simulate a circuit with UCC28700 in TINA ? If in case you have any existing transformer with the configuration mentioned in web bench power supply design please do send me in reply to this. If you do not have, please give me the necessary guidelines for creating a transformer mentioned in the web bench power supply design.

2.In the reference design of UCC28700 I have noticed a custom made transformer. How can i edit the settings of that transformer to suit my requirements. In the reference design the ouput is 5V. My desired output is 25V, 1.2A.

3. While I am perfoming transient analysis I am getting various graphs even though I have not mentioned them i.e., Graphs of V_V1, V_U_PM_27, V_MaskGEN. What are these graphs. why are they coming ?

I have attached my design and Hyper link of web bench power supply design too.

Thanks,

Ashok.

  • Hello,

I have not heard of any issues with Webench.  This might be just an issue with the modified Tina model.

Could you try adjusting the transformer model they have in the transient model that is working to see if you can get it to work?

The UCC28700 is a DCR flyback controller and the transformer model needs to have magnetizing inductance to work correctly.  You may be using an ideal transformer and that may be what your problem is.

  • Hi Mike,

The transformer model I have used is non linear transformer with secondary coils which is avaialble in TINA Basic menu.  I am not sure how to adjust the transformer model/parameters. If you can give me some inputs/procedure/specifications I can do that.

Also, I have not got any switching voltage at DRV pin.??

How can I genarate magnetizing inductance in TINA ? If by any chance if you have an existing Transfromer to work with my specification please do send me.

    My Specifications:

    Input: 240VRMS.

    Output : 24v, 1.2A.

Transfomer suggested by web bench power design:

    Primary :63 turns.

    Secondary: 11 turns.

    Auxillary: 9 turns.

    Thanks,

    Ashok

  • Hello,

I will take a look at this and will have an answer by Friday.

    Regards,

  • Hi Mike,

I am awaiting for your response.

    Thank you,

    Ashok

  • Hi, Ashok,

Michael is out for the US end of the year holidays. He will return to the office the week of Jan 4th.

  • Hi Don Dapkus,

Thanks for the update. My questions are related to custom made transformer and UCC28700 which is a fly back power supply controller. I am dubious about the information of gate driver application in here. If there are any links related to UCC28700 or Custom made transformer that would help me alot.

    Thank you,

    Ashok

  • Hi Don Dapkus,

We are running out of time can you please assign another engineer.

  • Hi Mike,

I am eagerly waiting for your response. I need your support in accomplishing this project. when you get a chance can you please provide the necessary information.

    Thanks,

    Ashok

  • Hello,

I reviewed  the model and it looks like that Tina did not have an accurate enough model for the transformer so the systems engineer created his own.

You could be able to modify the transformer turns ratios, primary leakage inductance and primary magnetizing inductance based on the following instructions.

  • Hi Mike,

can you please double check the document you have uploaded. Looks like it is empty when I open in MS word.

    Thanks,
    Ashok

  • Hello Mike,

                             Further more,

    1. I have intially tried to simulate the circuit in schematic-1(Attached, page-2). But I have noticed that, part 28630D and transformer metioned in not available in TINA. I am wondering if you can provide us with simulation file of 28630D and transformer mentioned in this document.
    2. I have noticed in reference simulation of 28700 and few of E2E posts in power forum, you(TI) are providing a custom made transformers to some engineers. Can you provide us with a custom made transformer to the circuit in Schematic-2. I am looking for a transformer T1 in schematic which can work with 28700.
