BQ24040: About overload request during charging

Part Number: BQ24040

Hi,

Customers is using the BQ24040 EVM for evaluation.
Please tell me about the operation of BQ24040 while charging.

How does this device work if the system requests 10A during the charging operation?
(Customers is using batteries that support 10A discharge.)

As a result of evaluation with the actual application and bq24040 EVM, it switched to discharging from the battery smoothly.
However, I was expecting to switch while VINDPM protection was working.

Could you explain the expected operation when there is a large load request during charging?

Regards,
Yusuke

  • Hello Yusuke

The BQ24040 can support a load connected to battery during charging.  Charger will operate in CC or CV mode, during CC the current is limited going to battery, during CV the voltage is limited near end of charge.  If the load is active current from charger does not change it is still limited by ISET resistor, current is drawn from charger and battery.    In the CV mode the unit will probably drop back to CC mode and limit current due to drop on voltage drop.

Note that the BQ24040 has a charge timer of 10 hours and must complete charge in that time or a fault is set.  If the load is large enough it could prevent charge from completing.
