TPS61030: TPS61030 VBAT Hot Plugging

Part Number: TPS61030

Hello

We are using the TPS61030 with two large super capacitors (60F each tow in series) the capacitors when charged can be at voltages as high as 5V. The super capacitors are very low internal impedance capacitors (<20mOhm) and are capable to very quick rise times.

We have observed that when these capacitors are hot plugged to the TPS61030, the device fails and stops functioning, even after disconnecting the capacitors, power cycling etc. It is permanent failure of the device.

Is this expected behavior, if so is there a recommended work around to this problem.

Thanks

DG

  • Hi Deepakji,

is the super capacitor connected to VIN or VOUT of the TPS61030?

also share your layout, as bad layout could lead to device damage.

  • Jasper Li

The super caps are connected to the VBAT pin. I will share the layout in a subsequent post. However, we have followed the reference layout closely, and we are facing this problem only with hot plugging event, with the capacitors charged. Other wise the design is working flawlessly.

Just to add more detail, the super caps are not on the board, they are off board with a 10cm long wire and a 2 pin connector. We are plugging this to the PCB with the TPS61030.

  • Hi Deepakji,

did you disable the TPS61030 when plug the super cap? if not, try to do this.

also measure the VBAT voltage waveform when plugging.
