BQ25883: BQ25883 current abnormal

Part Number: BQ25883

Hi Expert,

One customer is using bq25883, during testing with power bank input, the customer found below waveform. The typical output voltage of the power bank is 5V. After bq25883 powered up, there are several current spike on be found at the input side, the power bank voltage drop at the same time.  Then, power bank restart and repeat this procedure. Is this current spike at below figure normal phenomenon? If it is abnormal, what may cause it?

Best regards,

Lenna

  • Hi Lenna,

Which mode of operation is the in charger in, forward charge mode or reverse OTG mode?  Some spikes are expected, especially at initial power up and certain stage transitions. In charge mode, If a resistive and/or inductive input line to VBUS causes VBUS voltage to dip too low, below UVLO or ring back up high above OVP,  better layout and/or additional PMID capacitance may be needed.  Alternative, lowering the charge current setting at initial power up and/or lowering the system load at SYS, if possible, may help.

Can your customer repeat the above measurements but zoom in on spikes showing IBUS, VBUS, SW and SYS?  The zoom in should show at least a couple of the SW pulses.

    Regards,

    Jeff

  • Hi Jeff,

Thank so much for your detail reply and suggestions. This is in forward charge mode. I will let customer capture the related waveform tomorrow.
