TPS2595: bidirectional operation

Hi team,

My customer is looking for an eFuse which support bidirectional operation between Vin and Vout. I believe TPS2595 can support customer's requirement.

Condition

Vin range : 5V to 10V

Forward current(Vin to Vout) : 0.5A to 2A

Reverse current(Vout to Vin) : 1A to 3A

The customer expect following cases.

Case.1 : From the state of VIN < VOUT, turn EN to H(Active) to supply power from VOUT to VIN

Case.2 : From the state of VIN > VOUT, turn EN to H(Active) and supply power from VIN to VOUT, then state is changed to VIN < VOUT and supply power from VOUT to VIN

Questions from customer

If the TPS2595 can support Case.1, are the electrical characteristics applied in the Case.1 as well? Could you also tell me the workable protection function in that case?

The customer's desired protection function is as follows.

The overcurrent protection function does not work in the reverse direction (VOUT-->VIN).
Thermal shutdown works.

Yes you are correct. TPS2595 can support customer requirements.

Please refer following app note slva948-bidirectional current.pdf on Bidirectional use of eFuse. Refer section 4 for using TPS2595 for bidirectional control.

Apart from supporting bidirectional current flow and OFF-state voltage blocking, TPS2595 solution offers
additional protection which includes overcurrent limiting, short-circuit protection, and inrush current control
It will support thermal shutdown feature
Individual control of current limit in both the directions .

Hi Kunal,

Thank you for the answer and sharing the app note.

The Fig.14 in the app note uses two pcs TPS2595 for bidirectional current flow. Is that ok to use only TPS2595 #2(right side) in the Fig.14? In this case, I don't think that the current limit function work during VIN<VOUT because there is body diode from OUT to IN. Is my understanding correct? It seems that customer doesn't want current limit function when VIN<VOUT condition.

I need to check specifications in reverse direction direction. Does customer need thermal shutdown in reverse direction ? I will get back to you by tomorrow.
