TPS1HB08-Q1: How could we use more accurate current limit set by an external resistor?

Part Number: TPS1HB08-Q1

Hi team,

Could you tell me how we apply more accurate current limit set by an external resistor?

I found that equation (1) which says ICL is decided by KCL and RILM. KCL range for A version device is 120~208[A*kohm].

Do you have any idea for more accurate current limit control?

Regards,
Ochi

  • Hi Yoshiki,

    These family of devices TPSxHBxx have two main components as that will affect the variations for the accuracy of the current limit.

    1- In order to achieve higher accuracy higher current limit should be set. By setting the current limit to higher values, you will obtain the highest accuracy. In this case, by using lower resistance, you will be obtaining the best accuracy.

    2- Once the current limit has been decided, using resistors will low tolerance would give you more accuracy.

    In the design and development section you can find a tool "ICL Variation Calculator given RILIM (REV. A)" that will give you a better understanding of these variations. If you have more questions on this subject, let us know.

  • Hi Francisco,

    Thank you for your explanation.

    Could you tell me your answer No.1 about "The higher current limit is, the higher accuracy"?

    For example, in the case I would like to set minimum current limit ICLmin is10A, then I should use RLIMmax <=12 [kohm], is my understanding correct? Lower shows

    ICLmin = KCLmin / RILIMmax, that is, RLIMmax <= 120/10 = 12 [kohm]

    Ochi

  • Hi Yoshiki,

    You are correct, that equation will be the one use for the calculations. However, for the typical current limit I would recommend using the typical value for Kcl.

     For example:

    - If you want your current limit to be 10A. And you are using the version A for the device, I would be using Kcl = 160 to calculate the typical current limit.

    Rlim = 160/10 = 16k ohms

    The following image is taken from the calculator excel sheet I referred on my first answer. Its is important to understand the calculations, but I would definitely recommend using this calculator in order to obtain the accuracy values.

    Note: The table shows typical values and the accuracy based on lower and upper bound. Using the assumption that you are using 1% tolerance resistors. This calculator can be found in the web page for the TPS1HB08.

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    - For the higher current limit, higher accuracy question

    The table bellow shows the accuracy with lower typical current limit and higher typical current limit. The first image shows the accuracy you will obtained by setting the current limit to its lowest value. The second images shows the accuracy by setting the value to the upper bound.

    As you can notice, the accuracy increases by setting the current limit to higher values for this specific version of the devices. Using the table will give you a good understanding for your design when using the devices for different current limits. This may vary for different devices and different version of the devices.

  • Hi Francisco,

    Thank you! I understood how to calculate it.
