Gang Charger Design Considerations

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ24125, BQ24104, BQ24100

I'm designing a 12 position gang charger using the bq24104 and am conerned about interactions between the individual chargers, since they will run from a common power supply. A colleague of mine noted in a recent lab experiment that running 2 bq24125 resulted in oscillation when running 2 chargers from a single supply. I want to avoid this issue in my design so any suggestions would be helpful. In designing the 12 bay charger, can I get some reccomnedations on power supply rating output capcitance , etc? I'm comfortable with the design I've put together for the individual chargers, but unsure what will happen with 12 in paralell. I could throw extra input capacitance on the board, but then again, over-engineering is not free.

The design I'm putting together has 22uF input on each individual charger, and 6.8uF output capacitance. The charging current is 450mA.  I plan to do a star type power bussing on the PCB to the point where the 12V from the wall wart comes to the board.

  • In general, there should be no problems running multiple power supplies (or chargers) from a single input bus.  This is very common.  There are some common sense design consideratins that must be followed.  For the input to a power supply, more input capacitance is usually better.  I suggest using individual high quality ceramic capacitors (X5R) at the input to each individual charger.  Please follow the bq24100 EVM layout recommendations.  You should also have much larger bulk capacitance on the input power bus to the individual chargers.  You also need to make sure the input bus is capable of supplying the required power for all 12 chargers.
