LMZ10505EXT: Possible failure modes and prevention

Part Number: LMZ10505EXT
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPSM82480, TPSM82810

Hi,

My customer is planning to use LMZ10505EXT. They want to know the following points.

1. What are the possible failure modes of SMPS regulator.
2. What failure modes are taken care in this regulator.
3. The failure modes, which are not taken care in this regulator, what are the solution.

Regards,

Akshat

  • Hi Akshat,

The LMZ10505EXT is quite old, and is a good device if you need the -55C operating temperature.  If you can accept the normal -40 C operating temperature, we have newer power modules such as TPSM82810 and TPSM82480 to consider.

Your question is a general question, which cannot have a fully complete answer for every conceivable failure mode.  Let me summarize some items and you can then ask for questions, if needed.

As explained in the D/S, this device (and most devices) have protection against a too low input voltage (UVLO), a too high temperature (over temperature protection), and a too high current (current limit).

The best way to prevent damage to any DC/DC is to do a good PCB layout, as shown in the D/S and as explained in , and to operate the device within the recommended operating conditions.

Those 2 items are the biggest items that customers have issues with, in my experience.  PCB layout issues are easily preventable by reading the D/S, copying the layout recommendations, and having the layout reviewed by peers and/or here on E2E.
