UCC28180: overcurrent protection, soft & peak current limit, combined with IGBT power drive module

How should the overcurrent protection be determined when using a power drive module such as NFCS1060L3TT? Should the limits be below or above those of the power module? How exactly the soft and the peak current limits will interact with the protection of the module?

The question is where to set the protection of the UCC28180 - below or above that of the power module.

Hi Lenio,

Thanks for the clarification. Generally speaking, overcurrent limits (and the overall UCC28180 power stage) on the front end are set higher than the protections of the power module. The reason for this is because if the UCC28180 starts to current limit, either soft or peak limiting, the output voltage going to the power module will start to droop. I would recommend to set soft overcurrent limit to be slightly higher than when you expect the power module protection to kick in.
