TPS65217: What kind of battery can be used?

Part Number: TPS65217
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: BQ27220

We want to introduce a battery concept into our beaglebone based custom device with charging functionality supported.

I found in a datasheet sentence:

"The PMIC device provides a linear battery charger for single-cell Li-ion and Li-polymer batteries."

Does that mean we can use only single cell battery 1S1P or we can use single cell battery in series with multiple cells in parallel 1S2P?

Is there a easy way how to find out remaining capacity in the battery? I didn't find any support for this in a datasheet.

Thanks.

  • Hi Petr,

I have assigned this post to the expert for this device. Given that it was assigned later in the day, please accept a delay until tomorrow for a response.

    Best regards,

  • Petr,

The TPS65217 contains a linear battery charger with a maximum charge current of 500mA (default) or 700mA (can be set by I2C commands). Because of the relatively low charging current, it is assumed that you would be limited to using a 1S1P battery. If you chose to use a 1S2P battery, keep in mind the charging time would be longer due to the increased capacity (in mAh) of the battery. The only other recommendations I would give is the following constraint: choose a battery with integrated NTC and a nominal 10kOhm resistance at room temp. More details and other constraints are listed in the TPS65217 datasheet.

The TPS65217 does not contain a fuel gauge (like the BQ27220 for example), which you would need to tell you the remaining capacity in the battery.

  • Hi Brian,

thanks for your reply and confirmation we might use 1S2P battery pack with TSP 65217. We are aware of longer charging time but that is not an issue for us.

I will check BQ27220 for the fuel gauge.

    Petr
