BQ40Z50EVM-561: Battery shuts down unexpectedly

Hi,

Thank you for reading my question.

I am using BQ40Z50EVM-561, EV2400 to evaluate a Li-Ion battery. After I switch on my battery, I can see some output from left dashboard. (Please see pic. below)

After 1 sec, however, the battery is shut down unexpectedly. It could be turned on again after pressing 'wake' button on EVM, but will shut down again after 1s.

I am not sure if it is a firmware problem or config problem.

1) Please suggest the firmware version and the instruction to upgrade it.

2) Regarding the config.

I failed to change the NR to high to put gauge in non-removable mode with the error at bottom is 'initial read fail...'

Hi Rayna,

Does holding down the wake button keep the gauge awake? Then you can write to the NR bit.

The number of cells also needs to configured within DA config.

Hi Nick,

Thank you for your prompt reply. Please see my update below.

1) 'Keep holding wake button' is a good idea. I could config NR from DA Config. Could you please check it out for me if the settings are correct?

2) Even though I config the NR as above, once I release the 'wake' button from evaluation module, the battery back to shut down. You can also tell from the grey dashboard in above screenshot.

3) Could you please advise what bit I need to config for battery cells as you suggested? Any reference is appreciated here.

Hi Rayna,

Can you attach the .gg here? Also an image of register and bit register after sending a reset command.

The number of cells must be configured in CC1/CC0.

Sure, let me work on it. Could you please advise how to find .gg file you mentioned?

Yes, I clicked 'write all' after the new setting.

Also, do you have chance to check out the hardware connection I attached in old response? I would like to confirm the pin side has no problem. Thanks.

Hi Nick,

Below image is after I hit RESET command button in BQStudio, also the battery shuts down after releasing 'wake' button on EVM.

The hardware connection under this scenario shows below. Please confirm for me the pins are connected correct. Thanks.

Hi Rayna,

You need to configure the DA config (CC1/CC0) for the number of cells you are using. The default is 3 and must be changed if you are only using single cell.
For the connections to EVM please follow the EVM userguide: www.ti.com/.../sluuav7b.pdf

Update.

Good news, I happened to upgrade the firmware from R2 to R3 by forcing the battery awake, and finally it could stay alive all the time!

Next question is, how to config/train the battery as I notice the voltage and fuel % in dashboard is 0 (with actual fuel percent 46%). I guess I need to pick battery chemistry ID from below list. From my information, we are using Li-Ion battery. Could you please advise about the chem ID? Thank you.
