BQ25120A: VSYS doesn't start if only VIN is connected (no VBAT)

Part Number: BQ25120A

Hi,

in my use case i have a board where BQ25120A has CD pin low at startup and i see that if i connect only VIN, VSYS is not generated. if i connect VBAT the system starts only if i press the MR button while if both VIN and VBAT are present it starts automatically.

from datasheet it seems that CD low enables charging and gets power from VBAT however it also seems that VIN should be selected automatically as power source if VBAT is low.

we would prefer to keep CD low at startup because we want to control it via an external microcontroller and if we pull it to VIN we'd have excessive voltage as microcontroller has 1.8V I/O.

is there any reason for not starting up with VIN only in my use case? anything i could check?

thanks,

Dario
