BQ24780S: Parallel two BQ24780s for main battery and backup battery

Hi

The customer want to design the notebook circuit with dual battery. BQ24780s for main battery and BQ24780s for backup battery.

Use two BQ24780S, there are two sets of SMBUS on EC, each SMBUS controls one BQ24780S,

Is there an address conflict between the two charge and discharge chips?

If it is not feasible, please recommend a solution.

    The BQ24780S operates only as a slave device with the address 0x12H. There are 3 options to avoid a potential SMBus address conflict between the two BQ24780S chargers:

    • Have two separate SMBus communication buses to control each BQ24780S charger independently. You mentioned that the EC has two sets of SMBus communication lines, so this solution should work for the customer's application.
    • Use an SMBus mux
    • Use the BQ25713 and the BQ25713B. These two chargers are identical, but they have different I2C addresses for more convenient dual charger operation.
